The Great Old Ones, the French Lovecraftian atmospheric black metal ensemble have returned with their latest opus, ‘Kadath’. Released on January 24, 2025, six years after their last record ‘Cosmicism’ (wait; 2019 was SIX YEARS AGO?!), this album is a monumental journey through ethereal horror, blending blistering black metal with lush soundscapes. Drawing inspiration from H.P. Lovecraft’s novella ‘The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath’, the band has crafted a record that is as immersive as it is terrifying.
‘Kadath’ is a masterclass in atmospheric black metal. The album is dense and layered, with swirling guitars, haunting keys, and powerful drums that create a sense of otherworldly dread. The production is pristine, allowing every element to shine while maintaining the raw, visceral energy that defines the overall feel. This latest offering showcases the band’s ability to balance chaotic ferocity with melody, creating a soundscape that feels both expansive and claustrophobic.
The use of ambient passages and clean guitars adds depth to the album, providing moments of respite amidst the maelstrom. These quieter sections are just as evocative as the impending heavier ones, often filled with a sense of melancholy and longing that perfectly captures the essence of Lovecraft’s dreamlike narrative.
The lyrics on this album are both poetic and cryptic, weaving tales of forbidden knowledge, cosmic entities, and the fragility of human sanity. The album’s narrative follows the protagonist’s journey through the Dreamlands, and the band does an excellent job of translating this surreal, nightmarish quest into music.
‘Kadath’ is a perfect blend of brutality and beauty, capturing the essence of Lovecraft’s work while pushing the boundaries of the genre. It’s a journey into the unknown, a descent into madness, and a testament to the power of music to evoke the unimaginable.
