I love weird black metal and more and more comes out every month. So here is the first installment of a new mini review series, Some New Strange!
Druagveil /Selvnatt
Draugveil first appeared in 2025 with their debut album “Cruel World of Dreams and Fears”. Due to his image, a mixture of hype beast and typical BM fare, Draugveil was often mocked in online discourse but the music is undeniably fantastic. Vibrant and warm Romantic black metal streams though a landscape dotted with knights, swords, and roses. This year sees a collaboration with a likeminded fellow in Selvnatt with the release “Blades and Roses”. This is my first introduction to Selvnatt but I am instantly drawn in by their particularly dry vocal delivery, one that I love for this genre. “B&R” is an extremely fun 30 minutes of music that is replayable and provides a perfect escape from modern day life. Physical copies were released by PHANTOM LURE but some copies are floating around stateside in a few distros. Easily one of my favorites so far this year I cant wait for more from either one! Warlock Corpse
“Under the Cold Moon” sees Warlock Corpse blossom as a full entity. The eponymous musician is joined by Ayrat Leopardovich on Guitars, Evgeniy Dodger on Bass and backing vocals, Danila Bykovsky on drums. With a full band some old favorites are reworked into new beings alongside a few never beforehand tracks. Warlock Corpse play a wonderfully fun mixture of Black Metal and Dungeon/Keller Synth and have some seriously catchy songs that fit a wide variety of vibes. The album is available on BANDCAMP. It is sold out on vinyl through OBSCURANT VISIONS but a tape edition is coming in September via OUT OF SEASON
Midoran – Stardust Saga Vol. 2
France’s Midoran returns with the second offering of their Stardust Saga. Midoran continues to surprise and delight me with a bizare and hyperactive mixture of Black Metal, Breakbeat/Jungle, Dungeon Synth and a dash of Hip Hop. While part of the Cërcule Mortûaire collective, here Athäl’Zäckar handles the album primarily by themselves, unlike Vol1’s collab with Coer Doré. Contained within this album is a journey through the different rooms of a hidden Nightclub, jaunty yet threatening Black Metal passages, and a stop off somewhere that French Hip Hop is playing.
Midoran have added to their deep catalog with a true banger of an album. Play it loud and with plenty of bass for a great experience. I have not seen physical copies anywhere yet but the digital can be bought on BANDCAMP
