Once again, I find myself at a loss for words, in the presence of a masterpiece of human emotion. Fires in the Distance is one of those bands that proves that music is the language of emotion. Since their debut album, 2020’s Echoes from Deep November, Fires in the Distance have gifted us with truly cathartic music, developed even more beautifully with their sophomore album, Air Not Meant for Us, released in 2023 and rightfully earning its place among many end-of-year lists. With their third record, Circadian Promise, the band returns stronger than ever with their unique and passionate rendition of melodic death metal, retaining the emotional heaviness and intensity that sets them apart. It really is unbelievable how this band just keeps getting better, and I can’t stop looking at the stunning cover art by Caelan Stokkermans, whose art also graced the previous album covers.
In Circadian Promise, we are introduced to the band’s new vocalist and guitarist, Brendan Hayter, and his wonderful vocal range, which varies from low growls and higher shrieks to beautiful cleans. Founder and guitarist Yegor Savonin is the main songwriter and lyricist behind Fires in the Distance, and he continues to prove his amazing talent for capturing intense feeling and translating it into sound in a magical way that truly brings those feelings to life. Hayter and Savonin are perfectly rounded out by bassist and backing vocalist Craig Breitsprecher and drummer Jordan Rippe. Hayter’s cleans are a wonderful new addition to the band’s sound, and are incredibly effective in delivering beauty and darkness, anguish and hope.
The album opens with “Of Radiance and Levitation” – the perfect track to serve as an introduction to this stunning record. This song was released as a single along with a music video on April 14th. Hayter gifts us with his magnificent and deep harsh vocals, perfectly complementing the beautifully melancholic guitar melodies and strings. His cleans bring a wonderful new dimension to Fires in the Distance, intensifying the sorrowful atmosphere and contrasting gorgeously with the growls. The second track, “To You, Author of My Fade”, was released as a single on May 15th, along with a beautiful music video as well. The guitar riffs are wonderfully full of emotion in typical Fires in the Distance fashion, and at times, give off a more relentless and almost angry impression. The song turns sweeter toward the middle, with Hayter’s enchanting cleans preceding a lovely slower section. “Lightless Days of a Songless Bird” contains nothing but harsh growls that turn into anguished screams, accompanied by deeply moving and atmospheric guitar riffs and melodies.
The band just released a lovely lyric video for the fourth track, “By This Time Tomorrow”, another song full of melodies you can get lost in. The song ends with a quote by Alan Watts followed by a fervent and electrifying guest guitar solo by Dark Tranquillity’s Johan Reinholdz. The melodies in “Once the Silence Takes Your Place” are mainly carried by sweet piano notes and Hayter’s clean vocals, which make their anticipated return here in between his harsh growls. The sixth and final song, “Agonal Dreaming”, heightens the intensity for a strong ending to a breathtaking record. The guitar melodies here are more moving and divine than ever, turning slightly vicious towards the middle yet retaining all their beauty. Hayter’s harsh vocals continue to impress, showcasing a range in both tone and emotion.
A wonderful feat in modern melodic death metal, replete with intense emotion, Circadian Promise is sure to capture the hearts of fans, both old and new. The addition of the clean vocals works perfectly to further the band’s sound, creating more depth and range of emotion than ever before. Although most tracks are on the longer side, around nine minutes, they often don’t feel long enough. Every song is full of emotion from beginning to end, and not a single second feels meaningless. I was lucky enough to see them at a show recently, and the band members channel this same intensity in their live performance, bringing their music to life on the stage. Each member embodies pure talent and passion, and combined they are truly a powerful force to be reckoned with.
