Reviews, Interviews, and Podcasts celebrating the best Extreme Metal music

Label Spotlight: Headsplit records

Recently I purchased the debut album from Bogside Sniper Squardron and with it came some flyers. Underground labels and the promo material they mail with purchases are one of my favorite methods of new music discovery. This avenue was how I discovered the new releases from Nedgravd and Fake Dust. Below are brief reviews of the three albums, but first said promos!

Bogside Sniper Squadron – S/T

In 2023 Bogside Sniper Squadron released a much sought after demo playing a Black and Death Metal ass-shaking fusion similar to the likes of Sacriphyx, Grenadier or others in the fast and catchy vein. Bogside Sniper Squadron are from Philadelphia and they play ode to historic Irish identity and conflict, in particular the IRA and The Troubles.

Comprised of members of Covered in Sores and Devil Master, BSS have created a 23 minute thrill ride full of triumphant riffs and pounding drums. Thoughout the album musical odes and lyrics explore the bands subject matter more and more telling the story of previous conflicts and their eventual strike back. The BSS S/T is indeed a fitting soundtrack to fighting back against imperialism and for ones identity and independence just as the IRA or the Zapatistas did in recent times.

Nedgravd – “Ascension”

Self described “Norweigein cult entity” Negravd have released their first album “Ascension” on Ascension Day 2026 (May 14th). Said Holiday is a day that marks the day Jesus left our mortal plane, celebrated here for more sinister reasons. The band is made up of the following: T. K. Torbo – Evil spew of ancient spirits and broadaxe befoulment, L. V. Nielsen – Seven-headed black beast foretelling lugubrus prophecies, A. Rostadmo – Six-string bite, bloodbathing and solemn sorcery
O. K. Rostadmo – Skin flagellation, metal splintering and cremation, D. Organo – Keyboards.

Nedgravd have unleashed a powerful slab of OSDM reminiscent of bands such as Incantation, Impreciation and Infester. At almost 40 minutes in length, with a brief sample heavy interlude and outro, “Ascension” keeps pace and doesn’t let up. Constantly churning, the riffs are chunky and brash while the vocals gurgle up from below. A brief sample containing speech and another key heavy interlude are all that breaks up this mad onslaught.

Fake Dust – Decrepitizing Din of the Cerebral Psyopticon

Coming out of Portland, Fake Dust have graced us with a lethal dose of “Real West Coast Grind” with their debut album “Decrepitizing Din of the Cerebral Psyopticon). Contained within is a near 20 minute battery of constant grind most comparable to bands like Insect Warfare or P.L.F..

The album is crisp and clean, fun and catchy, yet punishing and relentless. The guitar and vocals are the standard blistering pace and tone yet done very well, the Bass is audible throughout and drum patterns are interesting and unexpected. There isnt much to say except this album is a must listen for fans of Grind and heavy music at large.

Copies are in their second run and can be found at HEADSPLIT and LP and Digital can be purchased via Bandcamp
