Heaven Shall Burn – Heimat

Heaven Shall Burn is a metalcore band from Germany that has been active since 1988. They play what I consider to be quintessential Metalcore – booty shaking hardcore on the edge of Melodic Death metal. In High School I listened to Antigone and Deaf to our Prayers and then Iconiclast came out as I was starting college, after this point I admittedly fell off the bands output so this album is a refreshing nostalgia bomb.
Heimat is an album that could have come out in 2010, riff forward metalcore with light breakdowns and easy to understand screamed vocals. At times the band reminds one of metalcores influences from Sweden In Flames and Arch Enemy, other times sounding like once American contemporaries Darkest Hour and Killswitch Engage (including a cover of Numbered Days), and still you can hear other German bands like Naera and Caliban. Vocals remain positive and prescient in these oppressive times.
A fun and easy listen and reccomended for metalcore and melo-death fans.
Sigh – I Saw The Worlds End

Sigh is one of the longest running Black Metal Bands but one of the most interesting and unique. Hailing from Tokyo Japan starting in 1990 the band has released genre classics like Scorn Defeat and Infidel Art and continues to innovate and push the boundaries of the genre. In 2007 Sigh released Hangmans Hymn (my first exposure to the band), a wonderfully cacophonous melange of furious black metal and thrash, orchestral music, and a sense of humor and grandeur unexpected from the genre. Sigh, led by Mirai Kawashima are obviously a band that enjoys making and playing music. This release is a rerecording of said album and is Mirai and the band realizing the full potential of their vision for the concept and art piece. Reccomended if you like sick shit.
Azathoths Dream – Solitary Forest Necromancy

Order of the Broken Sword members Necroblaster and L Azathoth release their third LP in the summer of 2025. I have written about this collective in previous pieces namely Luring in my best of 2024. Earlier in the year the band released a Dungeon Synth album Infernal Necromantic Mysticism and then released this BM focused album early summer. Cold BM with light keys/synths and a sorrowful twinge fill the 35 minute runtime. Excellent riffing and atmosphere lend to an overall captivating album. Excellent music for a nighttime walk or other nocturnal activities. Reccomended for fans of frosty BM and those who enjoy staring at a full moon on a cloudy night.
