Véhémence are finally back to bless our ears with more Medieval Black Metal of the most incredible caliber. Although technically a reimagining of Assiégé, Véhémence’s debut album from 2014, Assiégé pour l’éternité is the French black metal band’s 4th full-length release, and it is not merely a re-recording of the original songs. The tracks are fully reimagined and even have fully rewritten lyrics to accompany the inclusion of Véhémence’s traditional folk instruments. These songs have been gilded and polished to perfection, intensifying the band’s uniquely medieval sound and reminding the world that they truly have no equal.

The album opener, “De célestes cavalcades,” has an almost thrashy energy that goes really well with the catchy and irresistible riffs. Relentless and ferocious, Hyvermor’s harsh vocals give the track a mighty and epic feel. “Assiégé pour l’éternité” inserts a folky acoustic guitar version of the song’s opening riff in the beginning before going into one of the most addictive riffs ever à la Véhémence. This track is incredibly epic from beginning to end, with the French language vocals overflowing with passion and fervor. The 3rd track, “Le sang respire encore,” slows the tempo quite a bit and has a beautiful flute and acoustic guitar segment, before speeding up again into an amazing section that will have you headbanging irresistibly to the intense drum beats, guitars, and gritty vocals.

The label released a fun little teaser video with an excerpt from “En quête du Graal,” visually and sonically embodying the spirit of medieval times. The guitars and melodies here feel like an acquiescence in the face of insurmountable ordeals, with a more somber tone that still holds on to the hope of triumph. The last two songs, “Chant d’honneur” and “Par sombres forêts et vastes plaines,” have been switched in Assiégé pour l’éternité, with the latter now acting as an outro instead of an interlude. “Chant d’honneur” is an epic and triumphant track that is pummeling in its relentlessness. Hyvermor’s battle cries intensify this atmosphere, and the riffs resolutely carry the courage of knights going into battle. The final track is a lovely instrumental that feels like the calm after the storm, with the acoustic guitar beautifully complemented by gorgeous strings, evoking a sense of peace.

Groundbreaking in 2014 and timeless in 2026, Assiégé pour l’éternité is even more addictive than the original. As Véhémence have refined their sound over a decade, the gem that is Assiégé has been polished and refined to an extraordinary beauty, further cementing the band as the definitive Medieval black metal act with a distinctive French sound that is impossible to forget.
